It has been many months since my last post, for a number of reasons;
Firstly, I failed the class which required me to write these posts - I intend to dispute that, but regardless it made me feel like I was doing something wrong. I think the issue might have been that I didn't showcase enough of my own work, but I digress.
Secondly, we have been told to write about artists we are following and the like, and I don't know if I'm an outlier or something, but I don't really follow artists, so I can't very well do that.
Thirdly, we started the semester with an emphasis away from course-work and instead on a group-project for a number of weeks.
Aaand, I think that is about it.
Since then we have done a small project in the Unreal engine (which I had not used until then), which I will have to detail at some point, and now we are quickly heading into the main project for Semester C.
I have had a bit too much on my plate to really get into work yet, but will have to do so over the next couple of weeks.
We have to complete a design document for our project, complete with Gantt-charts and everything. My problem is that I am torn between two different project ideas, so I thought I'd list them here and hopefully have some epiphany.
Idea 1:
I'd like to try to build a sort of adventure-game forest world, where the player controls a 3D character. A large monster is patrolling the grounds, and it is the players task to take it down.
Pros: 3D world are very engrossing, and playing around with scale and hitboxes and dodging and the like seems like fun. If there is time (which I doubt), I could also work on some rudimentary AI for the monster, so it would forage or something like that.
Cons: I have tried many times to make a proper animatable 3D character, but have never been able to overcome issues with weight-painting. It doesn't matter how many times I've searched for the solution to some problem online, there are always more, and I fear this might propose insurmountable issues. Additionally, I have very limited experience with UV unwrapping, but this would then also present a welcome opportunity to learn.

I think this idea would allow me the chance to make something more aesthetically pleasing and impressive.
Idea 2:
After Nintendo's disappointing unveiling of the new Paper Mario game last month, I toyed with the idea of making my own version - actually an idea I've had for quite a while now. This idea would then be to make a version of a Paper-Mario style game, wherein the player could move around and fight and collect items and stuff like that.
Pros: The project could feasibly be expanded upon later and hopefully end in a finished game. Secondly, it would be fun to play with and animate that kind of graphic style, and creating and iterating upon different characters and enemies would most likely be enjoyable. Lastly, the game would present some forays into programming subjects I have not yet overcome, and so I could learn a bit in that subject as well.
Cons: It seems like a lot of the work would be programming-oriented, and I do not really view myself as a programmer. Additionally, if I cannot create a sufficiently pleasing art-style, the game might look unappealing. Additionally, it would give me less opportunity to practice 3D animation, a subject I am very interested in. Lastly, the game as a whole might be much less impressive, and would present a smaller chance of getting employed later on.
I will look over this list and hopefully come up with something soon.
